December 2009

December 11, 2009

I went into the shed last night, there hasn’t been much drop on the floor. I am assuming alot of the summer bees would of vacated during the November flight weather we had. I usually see more dead bees on the floor by this time of year.
One thing I noticed, as I walk down the rows, I can hear the hives clearly.
Either there are alot of bees in the hives this winter or they are unsettled for some reason. They stir a bit when I walk by, probably smell the CO2 from my breath. Alot of bees hanging over the bottom frames of my doubles. Looks good to me.

Got the bees put away during the last week of November.

The weather turned nice, and we have had one of the warmest Novembers on record.  Alot of work got done during this month.  the bees were able to take advantage of the nice weather getting at least a week to spread their wings.  We had seen temps around and above the 10 degree mark

Flight during November is real nice because it shortens the winter for the bees.  Many beekeepers had already put their bees away expecting an early winter.  Their bees wouldnt be able to take advantage of the great flight weather .  Such a pitty.  Nice to take advantage of it when it comes.

That s just how the business goes.  If I were not so busy in October, I might of put my hives away also.  Maybe.  I was certain we were getting a foot of snow end of OCtober.  Moving hives in from the yards in a foot of snow isnt fun at all.
